Water-Treatment Valves: What to Check Before You Specify

A valve enquiry that says “water treatment, DN100” leaves a lot open. Is the line carrying clean water, screened effluent, sludge or a dosing chemical? Is the valve isolating equipment, controlling a process or preventing reverse flow?

Start with the line’s job, not a familiar valve type. This guide helps water-industry engineers, maintenance teams and buyers organise a water-treatment valve specification, identify the questions that need an engineering answer and send a more useful enquiry.

Quick answer

Before specifying a water-treatment valve, define the actual medium, required function, pressure and temperature envelope, solids or chemical exposure, connection details, operation and maintenance access. For drinking-water contact, establish the applicable documentation requirements with the project owner. Then check the proposed valve and actuator against that complete duty. A valve family, body material or approval logo alone does not establish suitability for the installation.

1. Identify which part of the treatment process you mean

Water treatment is an application area, not a single fluid specification. Separating the duties on your valve schedule makes it easier to compare offers without treating every line as interchangeable.

Manufacturer guidance describes wastewater treatment as a sequence of processes and identifies sludge handling as an equipment duty in its own right. That is a useful reason to specify by process location rather than choose a single “wastewater valve” for the whole plant. 2. Define the function before choosing a valve family

Write down whether the valve must provide isolation, regulation, non-return duty or another defined function. If it will modulate, include the required operating range and ask for the selection basis; do not assume a valve intended for shut-off is suitable for continuous control.

3. Describe conditions, not just the nominal rating

Give normal operating pressure and the maximum or design condition, together with minimum and maximum temperature. Identify differential pressure, vacuum, reverse-flow conditions or transients where they form part of the design basis. Include the units and clearly separate measured values from assumptions.

For an existing installation, attach the valve reference and available system documentation. For a new project, identify who owns the hydraulic and process design. Ask them to confirm any unresolved operating conditions before a product is selected.

4. Review all wetted materials and the cleaning duty

A body-material description is not a complete materials specification. Ask the supplier to identify the relevant trim, seat, seals, sleeve or lining as well as the body. Include cleaning and flushing fluids if they pass through the valve.

5. Check installation, actuation and maintenance together

Include the nominal size, flange or thread standard, pressure class, face-to-face constraint and a drawing where available. A matching nominal size is not enough to demonstrate that a replacement will fit.

For an actuated package, provide the available utilities, required action on loss of power or air, controls, feedback and operating frequency. Ask for the actuator selection to be checked against the chosen valve and duty, rather than selecting it from the mounting interface alone.

Describe access limitations before requesting a quote: handwheel reach, actuator clearance, removal space, washdown exposure or a confined installation. Request the proposed assembly drawing and maintenance information so the responsible site team can review access and safe isolation arrangements.

6. Ask for the right drinking-water evidence

If the valve contacts water intended for human consumption, tell the supplier where it will be used and which project requirements apply. The Drinking Water Inspectorate distinguishes products used by water companies from products used within property boundaries; these are not interchangeable approval questions.

Do not assume that every valve needs the same approval route, or that a material description proves compliance. Ask the responsible project engineer or water company to establish the applicable requirements and obtain evidence for the exact offered product and its conditions of use.
